The EP elections are only weeks away. In a changing Europe, how does democracy manifest itself at state and citizen level? How have events such as the developments in Ukraine, and the EU reform debate impacted on the outlook for Europe?
With Vijay Rangarajan, Europe Director to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Vijay Rangarajan is Europe Director in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He has worked on European issues since 1996 in both London and Brussels, including on European defence, trade policy, justice and home affairs, and on a range of institutional issues. He has also worked in ministerial private offices, as Deputy Head of Mission and then Chargé d’Affaires in Mexico, concentrating on G8 themes.
From 2009-11 he was Constitution Director in the Ministry Of Justice and then Cabinet Office, and was Senior Responsible Owner (SRO) for the UK Supreme Court, and Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority. He was Multilateral Policy Director in the Foreign Office from 2011-13, responsible for the UK’s policy in organisations including the Security Council, other UN bodies, the Council of Europe (leading work on the Brighton Declaration), as well as human rights and conflict prevention.
Vijay has a degree in natural sciences, masters in maths, and PhD in astrophysics.
